Program for Full-time MTI Postgraduates

Program for full-time MTI postgraduates is designed according to the basic requirements set for master of translation studies education and further developed by drawing on the foreign experience of training high-level interpreters and translators and relating it to the current training pattern in China.

Ⅰ. Aim of the program                                                          

The program aims at turning out MTI graduates to be qualified and high-level interpreters and translators in different fields with professional integrity, language competence, and also with a good command of interpreting and translation skills and a wide range of knowledge.

Ⅱ. Prospective Students and Entrance Examination

Prospective students of this program generally are university graduates who have acquired bachelor degrees with solid bilingual knowledge and also may be students in other majors with qualified abilities. Only the students with required scores in the national-organized postgraduate entrance examination and the reexamination held by the applied school are enrolled. Admission date will be in autumn.

Ⅳ.Training Mode

1Academic Credit System: 

Upon successful completion of all courses (and thus the required minimum 38 credits) and successful defense of a degree thesis written under the close supervision of the thesis directors, students may apply for the postgraduate diploma and the degree of Master of Translation and Interpreting according to the application procedure.

2Research-discussion and Simulated Conference Interpreting Teaching Method: 

The interpreting courses mainly rely on the updated electronic information technology, such as, satellite televisions, simultaneous interpreting training labs and multi-media classrooms, etc… Senior interpreters with rich experience are invited to offer courses or give lectures. Project-translation teaching method is adopted in translation courses, that is, the department undertakes translation tasks concerned with various styles which are then assigned to the student. The teachers comment on their translation work whereby their professional skills could be enhanced.

3 Main Practice Steps:

Translation and interpretation practices run through the entire teaching course to turn out high-level translators and interpreters with practice ability and case study ability. Students are required to fulfill translation tasks with at least 150,000 words or interpreting practice with the required minimum 400 hours for graduation.

4 Tutor Group Instruction Mode:

The tutor group is mainly composed of professors and associate professors with qualifications for instructing master students, and also may consist of eminent interpreters and translators with senior professional qualifications working in foreign affairs offices, enterprises or business divisions. Double tutorial system may be adopted: students are instructed at the same time by a teacher in the university together with a senior interpreter or translator or a professor of editorship with rich practical experience and advanced research ability.

Ⅴ. Course Design

Courses designed for MTI degree include compulsory and elective courses. Students must earn the required minimum 38 credits.
