In the afternoon of Nov., 21st, Professor Wang Yougui from School of English Language and Culture delivered a lecture entitled The Chinese Tradition of Translation in the NO.4 Teaching Building, GDUFS (North Campus).
In the long history of Chinese civilization, translation also has a history of more than two thousand years. Characterized with a humorous way of presentation, Professor Wang gave a vivid and impressive profile of the two-thousand-year translation history in less than two hours, unfolding a grand historical picture in front of the audience. He made an accurate and brief summary and explanation of the Chinese translation tradition which included the tradition of cooperation translation, translation dependent on the sponsor’s purpose, practical translation, etc. Moreover, Professor Wang had a unique insight and understanding on the translation tradition starting from the 20th century. He explained for us the tradition of indirect translation and of writing “foreword” and “postscript” for the translation works. Teachers and students learned tremendous knowledge from this detailed and impressive speech. Finally, Professor Wang answered questions proposed by the students, and the speech ended in a harmonious and delightful atmosphere.
