The UN Translation Services ---Opportunities Coexist with Challenges

On the afternoon of March 3, the United Nations senior interpreter and translator Ms Zhu Jingwen delivered a lecture entitled the “UN Translation Services ---Opportunities Coexist with Challenges” in the NO.4 Teaching Building, GDUFS (North Campus). As the first lecture conducted by the School of Interpreting and Translation Studies (SITS) this year, it was warmly welcomed and well received by teachers and students. The participants of the lecture were Mr. Yu Dong, dean of SITS, Mr. Liang Xuehong, Party Committee Secretary of SITS, Mr. Mo Aiping, deputy dean of SITS, Ms Wang Dan, director of the Interpreting Department as well as teachers and students from various faculties.

Characterized with a unique perspective and a humorous way of presentation, Ms Zhu's lecture appealed to the audience. By this lecture, the audience deepened their understandings of the United Nations and the sacred duty of professional translation in the United Nations.

At the beginning of the lecture, Ms Zhu briefly introduced the organization and position of the UN. Then she clarified different features and challenges of interpreting and translation. She said, “The greatest pressure on an interpreter lies in the speed of the speech owing to the time limit, while the biggest challenge for a translator is how to cooperate with teammates”. Then she introduced the payment and considerable benefits a UN interpreter or translator enjoys, such as holiday allowance, child education allowance, health insurance as well as pension. The lecture won heated applause from the audience.

Finally, Ms Zhu concluded her speech with an introduction of different kinds of UN entrance examinations which filled the audiences with confidence and enthusiasm.

At the end of the lecture, Ms Wang Dan, director of the SITS Interpreting Department, gave a brief summary of Ms Zhu's speech. Then, Zhu Jingwen received a gift from Mr. Yu Dong and Mr. Liang Xuehong.

Ms. Zhu Jingwen gave a two-week lecture to the undergraduates and postgraduates from MTI and MA who major in interpreting and translation. The lectures enabled the students to have a more profound understanding and knowledge of the top level translation profession.
