In the afternoon of March 6th, Ms. Zhu Jingwen, a senior UN interpreter, had a meeting with MTI students. The former Party Secretary of SITS, Prof. Liang Xuehong and Director of MTI Education Center, Prof. Zhao Junfeng also participated in this meeting. Ms. Zhu answered various questions raised by students with wit, passion and great sense of humour.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Liang gave an introduction of education and working background of Ms. Zhu. She majored in Chinese literature and then studied abroad in Illinois, USA. Her education experience laid a good foundation for her bilingual proficiency. From 1972 to 2007, Ms. Zhu had been an English-Chinese simultaneous interpreter at the UN.
Ms. Zhu’s wonderful life experience greatly raised the students’ interest. The students asked a lot of questions and hoped to get some inspiration. When answering the students’ questions, Ms. Zhu introduced in detail about how to apply and prepare for the UN interpretation exam, how she developed her career, how to learn interpreting and do interpreting job at the UN.
The students benefited a lot from the two-hour meeting. Not only had they heard a great story about Ms. Zhu’s life, but also realized that opportunities and challenges coexist in interpreting. Besides, they learned how to study interpreting and that practice played a key role in interpreting.
At the end, Prof. Zhao made a conclusion, he hoped that the MTI students could learn from Ms. Zhu and become outstanding interpreters for the UN one day, and make GDUFS proud for them in the future.
